The United States is one of the most passionately unified nations in the world, but with every state comes a totally different way of life. With modern-day cowboys in the south, Hollywood standbys in Los Angeles and suit-clad moneymen in New York, there is no doubt that this is one incredibly diverse country. Explore the glitz and glamour of casino jockeys in Las Vegas before entering the desert landscape of Arizona. Saloon hop on Whiskey Row and be dumbstruck by the titanic gorge of the Grand Canyon. Finish up in Hollywood for some beachside sun and glamorous shopping excursions, and perhaps, if you’re lucky, spot a few celebrities.
Day 1 Las Vegas
Kick off this American adventure in style in the world’s capital of gambling, where the casinos provide a lot more than just blackjack tables and pokies. Why not put on a poker face and hit the casino floor, watch a mind-blowing show or stroll the fabulous shopping districts. Famous for all-you-can-eat buffets and a raging nightlife, Vegas has something for everyone.
Day 2 Lake Powell
Leave behind the ‘city on lights’ and enter the desert of Arizona. Enjoy the wide open spaces and sleep overnight in a ranch hand’s bunkhouse at Lake Powell. Relax in a sandstone cave, walk around the area or get active on the lake, whether in flippers or on a kayak or boat.
Days 3-4 Monument Valley
Learn about the Navajo Indians, the largest Native American tribe in the US, at Monument Valley, where more than 200,000 Indians of the Navajo tribe live. Walk past giant sandstone pillars and rock pinnacles, keeping the camera at hand. The angle of the sun means that the landscape is constantly changing colour; it’s near impossible to take a bad photo.
Days 5-6 Grand Canyon National Park
Stand in awe of the incredible Grand Canyon, a national landmark, which stretches 28 km wide, 365 km long and more than 1.6 km deep. It took between three and six million years to form. Explore the site on foot while walking the South Rim Trail or hiking to Plateau Point. Alternatively, opt to take to the skies on a scenic helicopter ride over the spectacular valley.
Day 7 Prescott
Once the capital of Arizona, Prescott is now a small town with a whole lot of charm. Stroll though Prescott’s historic downtown and head to Whiskey Row for a nip where America’s most famous cowboys and notorious outlaws once came to drink. Perhaps head to Prescott National Forest, see the stunning Willow and Watson Lakes or hang about in town and watch a true blue rodeo show.
Days 8-9 Los Angeles
Journey to the ‘City of Angels’ to see the Hollywood sign, shop on Rodeo Drive or laze on Venice Beach. Explore the impressive collection at the Getty Center, including the artistic works of Van Gogh and Money, or chase down the city’s best food trucks for an Angelenos dining experience. Los Angeles has something for everyone and makes for an awesome final destination to sit back and soak up the memories.
